Linde (Praxair) in Arizona: Key Developments

How does Linde (Praxair) fit into AI?

Modern AI runs on physical silicon, and that silicon passes through several hands before it ever answers a question. Here is the path, and where Linde (Praxair) sits on it. Stages not marked below are shown for context and are not claims about Linde (Praxair).

  1. Chip design: Companies like Nvidia, Apple and AMD design the chips. Chip designers decide what a chip does and hand the blueprint to a factory. The three companies whose designs matter most to AI - Nvidia, Apple and AMD - do that work elsewhere, then send the designs to fabs. None of them owns a fab of its own.
  2. Wafer fabrication (here today): Fabs print billions of transistors onto silicon wafers. Bulk gases piped to the TSMC Arizona fabs from next door. A fab prints a design onto a polished disc of silicon called a wafer, layer by layer, until billions of transistors exist where there was blank material. It is the hardest and most expensive step in the chain, and the reason a single factory can cost tens of billions of dollars.
  3. Advanced packaging: Wafers are cut and assembled into finished chips. Packaging cuts a finished wafer into individual chips and assembles them, often stacking several pieces of silicon and memory into one component. For AI chips this step is nearly as demanding as fabrication, and a wafer is not a usable product until it is done.
  4. Servers and devices: Chips are built into AI servers, phones and PCs. Finished chips are assembled into the things people actually buy and deploy: data-center servers, phones, laptops. This is where a chip stops being a component and starts being a product.
  5. AI in use: Data centers and devices run AI models on that silicon. The end of the chain: models answering questions, generating images and driving software, running on the silicon every earlier step produced. Every AI service anyone uses is running on physical hardware somewhere, and that hardware started as a wafer.

About Linde (Praxair)

What Linde does

Linde plc, formed through the merger of Praxair and Linde AG, describes itself as the largest industrial gas company worldwide. It has head offices in Woking, England, and Danbury, Connecticut, and trades on the Nasdaq.

Linde reported $34.0 billion in sales for 2025 and 65,177 employees worldwide at year end. Electronics customers made up about 9% of its 2025 sales outside its engineering business, according to its annual report.

How it supplies a chip fab: for its largest customers Linde builds plants on or next to the customer's site and pipes the gas in, under contracts that typically run 10 to 20 years. Its U.S. semiconductor page lists ultra-high-purity nitrogen, oxygen, argon, hydrogen, helium and carbon dioxide among the gases it sells to fabs.

In Arizona

The gas complex on the TSMC campus: on September 8, 2021, Linde announced a long-term agreement to supply a new multi-billion dollar chip plant in Phoenix, with a total investment of approximately $600 million. Linde said it would build, own and operate on-site plants making ultra-high-purity nitrogen, oxygen and argon, with the first ones due in the second half of 2022.

Who the customer is: Linde's releases call it only "one of the world's largest semiconductor manufacturers." The U.S. Commerce Department's 2024 draft environmental assessment of TSMC Arizona names it: the Linde plant "will provide bulk quantities of nitrogen, oxygen, and argon to TSMC Phases 1 through 3" and the same gases to the general market.

The $1 billion expansion: on July 31, 2026, Linde said it had been awarded a new long-term agreement and would invest $1 billion to add two air separation units to the three already at the site, supplying two new chip fabs. Linde again did not name the customer. Arizona AI does not add the two announcements together: Linde has published neither a combined figure nor what it has spent.

Where the plant is: the federal assessment places it on the westernmost part of the TSMC campus, across W. 51st Ave. from the production areas, on land Linde leases, and says Linde will sublease part of the parcel to Air Liquide to supply bulk hydrogen.

Street address: Google Maps lists Linde Inc. at 32400 N. 51st Ave., Phoenix, just west of 51st Avenue between Dove Valley Road and Loop 303. A second Linde listing about 280 meters away, "Linde Gas & Equipment TSMC Project," gives 5100 W. Carefree Hwy. as its address.

What the 2020 plans said: the Phoenix Business Journal, reading Linde's January 2020 city filings, reported plans for about 8,000 feet of pipelines, buildings under 20,000 square feet with towers of 120 and 165 feet, and 14 plant employees and 14 truck drivers. Linde told the city "We consume 25 times the amount of electricity of a normal industrial customer". Linde has not published a current Arizona headcount.

The public approvals Arizona AI found:

  • October 6, 2021: the Phoenix City Council adopted an industrial gas pipeline license agreement with Linde.
  • May 20, 2022: Maricopa County issued the plant's air permit, according to the federal assessment.
  • January 25, 2023: city staff asked the council for two 15-year licenses for gas pipelines in 51st Avenue, from Dove Valley Road to Loop 303.

Tempe office: Linde's own U.S. contact page lists its Arizona regional sales office at 1620 W. Fountainhead Pkwy., Tempe.

Other Linde sites: Google Maps lists Linde Electronics at 1122 N. 52nd St. in Phoenix, with photos of the site; Arizona's 2014 environmental registry already listed Linde LLC there.

Kingman gas plant: Linde runs a specialty gas plant at 3426 Griffith Rd., Kingman, still listed on Google Maps under the Praxair name. Linde Gas & Equipment filed an EPA risk management plan for the site in July 2023. A privately published Mohave County highway guide described the plant in 2012, then as Praxair Electronics, as producing arsine and phosphine for semiconductor manufacturing.

Stores: Linde's store locator lists 14 Linde Welding Gas & Equipment Center stores in Arizona, in Phoenix, Mesa, Tucson, Flagstaff, Prescott, Kingman, Yuma, Casa Grande, Show Low, Lake Havasu City and Fort Mohave. They sell welding gases and equipment and have no published role in Linde's chip supply work. They are listed under "Other Arizona locations" below.

Role in AI and chips

Fab utilities, not chips: Linde makes no chips. Its Phoenix plants make the nitrogen, oxygen and argon that wafer fabs use in large volumes and pipe them next door. The chips made in wafer fabs include those that AI systems run on.

Demand from AI: in its 2025 annual report Linde wrote that "demand from semiconductor manufacturers and the expansion of AI-related digital infrastructure remain strong." It calls the Phoenix site one of its largest investments for an electronics customer anywhere.

Controversies and Issues

September 2025 outage at TSMC Arizona (reported, not confirmed): TSMC confirmed that "a power outage at a TSMC supplier occurred" and did not confirm whether any losses occurred. Data Center Dynamics, relaying a report by journalist Tim Culpan, named the supplier as Linde and reported that TSMC scrapped thousands of wafers.

DIGITIMES later cited unnamed supply-chain sources who blamed "unstable gas purity from supplier Linde", a different cause. These are third-party reports that Linde and TSMC have not confirmed, and they are not independently verified. Arizona AI found no statement from Linde about the outage. Status as of October 2026.
