onsemi is a global semiconductor company headquartered in Scottsdale, Arizona, with roots that reach back through Motorola and Fairchild Semiconductor. The modern company was created in 1999 when Motorola spun off its standard-products semiconductor business as ON Semiconductor. It went public in 2000, acquired Fairchild Semiconductor in 2016, and rebranded as onsemi in 2021 as it concentrated its strategy around intelligent power and intelligent sensing.

Arizona has been part of that lineage for decades. onsemi says it and its predecessors operated from the 52nd Street and McDowell Road site in Phoenix beginning in 1952. That property served first as a manufacturing site and later as design and solution-engineering labs and the corporate headquarters. In March 2023, onsemi moved its headquarters to 5701 N. Pima Road in Scottsdale, on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. Its 2025 annual report describes the leased Scottsdale building as roughly 200,000 square feet housing the corporate headquarters plus design-center and research-and-development operations. The current Scottsdale location is a headquarters and engineering site, not one of the manufacturing facilities listed in onsemi's 2025 Form 10-K.

onsemi's core business sits deeper in the hardware stack than the GPUs and CPUs that receive most AI attention. The company makes power semiconductors, analog and mixed-signal devices, and image and other sensing technologies. Its products manage and convert electricity, sense the physical world, and help control machines. Those capabilities are used across vehicles, industrial equipment, energy infrastructure, data centers and increasingly robotics and other forms of Physical AI.

AI data centers have become a particularly important growth market. onsemi supplies power-conversion technology across the power path that feeds high-density computing hardware, and it is working with NVIDIA on the industry's transition toward 800-volt direct-current power architectures for next-generation AI data centers. In May 2026, onsemi said its role in NVIDIA's MGX ecosystem spans power-supply, battery-backup and emerging 800 VDC power-distribution applications. By August 2026, CEO Hassane El-Khoury described AI data centers as onsemi's fastest-growing business and said the company expected that revenue to more than double during 2026.

The next strategic step could broaden onsemi far beyond power and sensing. In June 2026, the company agreed to acquire Synaptics in an all-stock transaction valued at about $7 billion. Synaptics would add Edge AI processors, neural processing capabilities, wireless connectivity and human-machine interfaces. onsemi describes the proposed combination as a move toward four connected pillars of Physical AI: Power, Sense, Connected Compute and Control. The transaction is still pending and is expected to close in mid-2027, subject to Synaptics shareholder approval, regulatory approvals and other closing conditions. Until then, Synaptics remains a separate company.

The company's recent history also includes a substantial manufacturing reset. Weakness in automotive and industrial demand contributed to a 15.3% revenue decline in 2025, from about $7.08 billion to about $6.00 billion. onsemi initiated a global workforce reduction of roughly 2,400 employees in 2025 and disclosed another reduction of roughly 650 employees in January 2026. The company has also continued its 'Fab Right' strategy, including agreements announced in July 2026 to divest two manufacturing facilities. Public filings do not identify an Arizona-specific share of those workforce reductions, so ArizonaAI does not attribute them to Scottsdale.

For Arizona, onsemi adds a different layer to the state's semiconductor economy than Intel's and TSMC's large fabrication campuses. Arizona is the corporate and engineering home of a global supplier whose technologies reach automotive electrification, industrial automation, AI data-center power and intelligent sensing. If the Synaptics transaction closes and the combined strategy works as planned, Scottsdale would also be the headquarters of a company with a much broader position in Edge AI and Physical AI. That makes onsemi important to Arizona's AI story even though its current Scottsdale operation is not a wafer fab.
